Macau, situated on the western bank of the Zhujiang River, was once a fishing port known as 'Ama Port' during the Ming Dynasty. The Ma Zu Temple, established in this period, signifies the deep-rooted presence of Ma Zu’s faith in Macau’s community for over four centuries. With the early settlers largely depending on fishing for their livelihood, Ma Zu became a revered protector of sailors and fishermen. Among the flowers traditionally offered to Ma Zu are roses, hydrangeas, orchids, lilies, silver willow, and lucky bamboo, each symbolizing good fortune and prosperity.
