Photographer Chen Xianyao has been living in Macao since 1999, witnessing the city’s dramatic transformations through his lens. From the historic moment of Macao’s return to China to the bustling life of the old-town, he navigates between the ancient Portuguese-styled alleys and the modern steel-and-glass buildings. Over twenty years and hundreds of thousands of shutter clicks, traditional film has gradually been replaced by digital cameras and Chen’s images become the “developer of time”, capturing the intersection of individual aging and urban growth. Cities of every era leave their unique atmosphere and memories, only to quietly fade away as the new eras take their place. With his lens, Chen resists forgetting and tells the evolving story of a city through images.
