Fishing Songs, New Dwellings:Renewal Design of the Dan People’s Settlement in Lingshui, Hainan

The design research takes the integration of production and residence as the background, based on the coordinated development of the three living spaces, aiming to inherit the Dan people 's culture to stimulate the vitality of the settlement and promote the sustainable development of the region. Through the introduction of small business group model, combined with Dan people 's traditional fishery and modern tourism, cultural creativity, characteristic catering industry, to create an economic growth point with regional characteristics. The design focuses on the preservation of the overall form of the settlement. Through modular technology, it realizes flexible space renewal and functional layout, provides flexible space for settlement development, and creates green buildings.
  • Bird’s-Eye View of the Floating Market The floating market is organized into four functional zones, extending from the fishing dock: a fish trading hub, cultural-creative experience area, maritime dining space, and intertidal foraging experience zone.
  • Rendering The floating market is equipped with a circular pedestrian walkway, temporary boat docking points, and additional shaded leisure installations, enhancing both waterfront accessibility and the visitor experience.
  • Individual Building Based on a 3m × 3m modular grid, essential living units such as bedroom, kitchen, toilet, and living room modules are provided. These can be assembled modularly according to the specific needs of each household.
