The architectural design competition “Reimagining Future Workplace of Macau: The Vertical Campus” organised by the Architects Association of Macau (AAM) in 2021 has raised architects' awareness on the reimagination of future government office buildings. Inspired by the competition design brief, this project is also based on the same design objective of introducing a harmonious and smart government office building that is inviting to the general public in the new urban Zone A. With acknowledgement that the COVID-19 outbreak has already generated extensive impacts on the global environment and society, especially with the precedential experiences of several infectious disease outbreaks in the past decades, adaptive building design which is beneficial in the promotion of human health and wellbeing are particularly essential for sustainable development. This project not only aims to provoke public realisation of the COVID-19 impact on public government building, but also seeks architectural solutions in minimising viral transmission within indoor public spaces. The proposed design focuses on applying various preventive tactics to provide a satisfactory quality of public built environment in the future post-pandemic era.
